Mary Petro – (Yum-Yum) - Mary Petro received a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University under the guidance of renowned pedagogue Anne Perillo. While at DePaul, Ms. Petro performed as Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme, as Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, and as Anne Sexton in Conrad Susa’s Transformations. Ms. Petro perfomed as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro and as Fiametta in Suppe’s Boccaccio, both in New York City.
Ms. Petro sang the role of Pamina in Mozart’s Magic Flute with the Rome Festival Opera before beginning a tenure at the Houston Opera Studio. As one of the youngest performers ever to participate in the prestigious program, Mary Petro made her Houston Grand Opera debut in the world premiere opera Harvey Milk and also performed in The Song of Majnun (released by Delos on compact disc). Ms. Petro is a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Ms. Petro has been seen in the New York Metropolitan area as Arminda in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera and at Alice Tully Hall for the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation awards.
As an orchestral soloist, Mary Petro has performed Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as well as his setting of Andromache’s Farewell with the Norwalk Symphony in Connecticut. Ms. Petro is equally at home in traditional and modern opera. She recently expanded her repertoire to include Russian roles by singing the title role in Iolanta directed by famed British director Colin Graham. They collaborated again with Ms. Petro playing the Female Chorus in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia.
Most recently, Ms. Petro performed the role of Marguerite in Boito’s Mephistofele in Tel Aviv, Israel, Mimi in La Boheme with Anton Coppolla at the Shubert Theater, and Giorgetta in Il Tabarro in New Haven, Connecticut.
As a recitalist, Mary Petro is a winner in the Washington International Competition for singers. She recently performed a recital at the Chicago Cultural Center on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series that culminated with a live broadcast on WFMT radio. Ms. Petro has also performed recitals in St. Louis, New Mexico, and Connecticut. Upcoming performances include a performance with the Music in the Loft chamber music series in Chicago.
Ms. Petro also holds a Master of Music from Yale University. She attended the Academia Verdiana in Busetto, Italia, as well as the Music Academy of the West.
Ms. Petro has been honored with the Gerda Lisner Foundation Grant, the Heida Hermanns Prize for Voice, the Liederkranz Award, the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Study Grant, a AnnMarie Gerts Scholarship, a MacAllister Award, and the grand prize in the Bel Canto Competition. Ms. Petro received the Opera Index Viva Voce Award and was a recipient of a Lynn Harvey Scholarship, Musicians Club of Women. Ms. Petro has also participated in the Washington International Competition, the Palm Beach Opera International Competition, and the New Jersey State Opera International Competition.
