Auditions for principals and chorus members for both shows will be held on Monday, November 5 and Wednesday, November 7, 2001 by appointment only, from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. at First Congre-gational Church, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich. Call backs will be on November 10 at 10-12. If you are interested in trying out for a principal role or for the chorus, call Steve Levinson at 203-975-9283. For Trial by Jury, we need 1 tenor, 2 baritones, 2 basses, and 1 soprano. For H.M.S. Pinafore, we need 1 tenor, 3 baritones, 2 basses, 1 soprano, 1 mezzo, 1 contralto. All parts are needed for the chorus. If you were in the chorus last year, you won’t need to audition again.
For principal auditions, prepare two contrasting works, one of which should be in English, which best demonstrate your ability. For specific roles, prepare one aria with recitative (if applicable) from HMS Pinafore. You should also be prepared to read dialogue. For the chorus, please prepare two contrasting works which best demonstrate your ability.
Directions From I-95, North or South: Take Exit 5, stay in Right lane (Riverside, Old Greenwich). At end of ramp, turn right onto U.S. 1 (East Putnam Avenue). Stay in right lane At first light, turn right onto Sound Beach Avenue. Follow Sound Beach Avenue until you pass a rotary. Perrot Library on left, Binney Park on right. Bear right around rotary. Immediately after rotary, take the first left onto Forest Avenue. The church is a large gray stone building on the right. Take the first driveway on the right into the church parking lot. Park near the cemetery. Walk to the south side of the building down a driveway. The entrance to the auditorium is off the driveway . Use door on right and go up steps one flight to the choir room.
If you haven’t paid your membership dues, send your check to our treasurer Guy Stretton at 62 North Ridge Road, Old Greenwich 06870. Dues are $20 a person, $30 a family.
If you are no longer an active member, but would like to receive the mailings, including a new directory we hope to get out by the first rehearsal, you can join as an associate for the same $20.
Troupers Welcomes Nate Merchant as Stage Director—The Dynamic Duo
Ready to Roll
Nate Merchant of New York City has been appointed stage director of Troupers Light Opera. A Shakespeare aficionado as well as a person who loves Gilbert and Sullivan, Nate has directed both theater and opera, include Il Barbieri di Siviglia and Don Pasquale with the Bronx Opera, Hamlet, The Importance of Being Earnest, Julius Caesar, and Edmund Ironside for American Globe Theater in New York, Beauty and the Beast, Il Segreto di Susanna, The Face on the Barroom Floor, and Molinos Dear Viento for The coOPERAtive Opera Company in New York and Ondine, Richard III, Falstaff, Brave Hearts, and La Boheme in New Jersey and New York City. He was assistant director for The Yeomen of the Guard and Pirates of Penzance with the Washington Savoyards and has been assistant director in productions throughout New England and New York. He has been Producing Director with the American Globe Theater from 1998-2001.

Nate will bring this sharp direction and his enthusiasm and expertise to Troupers as he and Keith Johnston are already working closely together. With this dynamic duo on board, we should be an exciting show this year!
On Friday, November 16th new and old Troupers will get together at Silloo Madan’s at 7:30 for dessert and coffee to launch the year’s show. This is a chance to meet new members, renew acquaintances, and especially to meet our two new directors, Keith Johnston and Nate Merchant (see Nate’s bio in next column). This is an important meeting because you will be picking up your scores and tapes for the two shows.Directions: From either direction: Take the Merritt Parkway, Exit 36. Turn left onto Route 106. There is a light at the end of the ramp where you make your turn. At the next light veer left onto Weed Avenue (106 goes off to the right). After approximately a mile and a half, you will come to a stop sign. Frogtown Road on the left. Silloo’s house is number 224 and her phone number is 203-801-0652.
